Some Facts

Over 25% of Northfield citizens are 60 years old or more.
Older adults will be 35% of the Massachusetts population by 2035.
Worldwide, for the first time ever, there soon will be more people over 65 than under 5.
Life expectancy is now 30 years longer than it was in 1900.
Governor Baker has set the goal of making Massachusetts the most age-friendly state in the union.

Background

In 2001 some people in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood organized a “virtual retirement community”. This community is a cooperative providing services and social activities enabling residents to remain in their homes as they age. Called a “village”, their project became a model for hundreds of similar organizations around the United States and beyond.

Villages are nonprofit, grassroots groups run by volunteers. Some also have a paid staff as it becomes necessary and feasible. Neighbors at home is a volunteer organization.

The Beacon Hill project resulted in the national Village to Village Network (vtvnetwork.org), of which Neighbors at Home is a member.
